East Aegean Imray - Rod Heikell

This pilot book by Rod Heikell concentrates on the southeastern corner of the Aegean Sea. It covers the Greek Islands from Patmos to Kastellorizon and the islands in between, and the adjacent Turkish coast from the Gulf of Gulluk and the Bodrum Peninsula to Kas. As with any Rod Heikell book this will end up as the standard pilot book throughout the entire yacht charter fleet of the Aegean.

That being the case, then sadly the book’s not full of seductive aerial pictures of quiet secluded anchorages that charter holiday-makers may be accustomed to - which is a bit of a shame.

However, the colour chartlets for each of the harbours are impressive, detailing the prevailing winds, the safe anchorages, the danger marks and rocks, plus the location of the shops, tavernas and facilities etc.This book follows the same style and format (246 x 189mm) as its sister companions - The Ionian and The West Aegean, and at just over 300 pages its densely packed with useful information, up-to-date plans and photographs.

In addition there are quick reference tables on facilities and services for all featured ports, which all helps towards planning one's cruise. Boxed off from the main narrative, Rod also provides interesting snippets of local history and maps of shore excursions to some of the key visitors attractions, giving the book both value and interest.

Rod’s introduction is vital reading to the first time visitor to the region for he addresses the reader to all things Turkish and Greek as well as their formalities, documentations, customs and etiquette etc. Further advice is given on getting around, food and drink, banks, provisioning and access to weather forecasts and radio signals.Rod Heikell is the only authoritative writer when it comes to cruising the Mediterranean with his unique blend of clear sailing instructions and good travel writing.
